The mission of the Book Divas website is to “promote literacy among young adults and students while creating an active community where they can voice their opinions and thoughts.” The site includes a discussion board, book reviews, a blog, writing resources, contests, and much more.

Book Divas encourages librarians and teachers to become involved with the website, so they understand how to engage youth in reading and writing. Here is what Book Divas has to say about it:

Through Book Divas you will be linked to other librarians and educators across the globe. The discussion forum will allow you to chat about topics that matter to you. Ways to be more effective at your job, how to retain teenagers attention and putting distractions behind you are all possible topics that you may come across here. Not only will you be able to chat with those in your field, but Book Divas will serve as the link between you and the young readers themselves. Here you can find out what the top reads for young adults are, what type of books interest them and what the current trends are among that population is. Now you can be linked to thousands of young readers instantly. Book Divas can provide an overview of what’s happening in the reading community by isolating only book talk and sharing that information with you.

New Cafe on Falls Road Coming Soon!

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

coffee.jpgThere is a new coffee shop in the works on Falls Road and 36th Street (The Avenue). I’ve been eying the place for a couple months, waiting for its doors to finally open, but no luck yet. Here is what I know: It will be a late night cafe, open until 2am. They’ve already painted the exterior in bright colors. Unfortunately, its difficult to get a peak inside beause there is a plastic cover over the windows. Although there is Common Ground Cafe on 36th and Evergreen on Coldspring Ave, both places close early. Doubledutch Boutique and Atomic Pop have helped to improve Falls Rd and hopefully the new cafe will bring more success to an area of Hampden that could use some improvement.

The Brewer’s Art

Monday, August 20th, 2007

brewers.gifLast Friday, friends and family joined my husband and me at Brewer’s Art in Mt. Vernon for our rehearsal dinner. Brewer’s Art’s website describes the restaurant and brewery as:

Set in a grand Mt. Vernon townhouse, The
Brewer’s Art offers many temptations for
your palate. Our seasonally-influenced menu
of European-style country fare features meats,
fish, seafood, pasta, and vegetarian offerings.
Dinner is served daily between 5:30pm -
9:00pm (later on Thursdays, Fridays and
Saturdays) and light fare is available from
4:00pm - 11:00pm. Our creative pastry chef
prepares our homemade desserts.

In addition to brewing our fine beers on the
premises, we offer a carefully picked selection
of beers and fine wines from around the world,
and one of Baltimore’s best selections of
scotches and spirits.

Everyone raved about the service and the food. We felt free to move around the long table for fifteen guests and mingle after the three-course meal. A few weeks before the dinner, we chose two first course options and four entree options to offer our guests. The dessert was chef’s special and the fruit torte and flourless chocolate cake was outstanding! Although we were in the same room with other parties, the event still felt intimate. In addition, the home brewed beers were an enjoyable treat for out of town guests.

Going to the Chapel…

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

due.jpgIn almost every post, I’ve mentioned my fiance. Soon, he will be my husband and we are very pleased with the site of our wedding. Linwood’s Restaurant has been wonderful to work with over the past eight months. From the ceremony to the last dance we will be celebrating in the private sister restaurant- Due (pronounced “doo-ay”).

Here is their philosophy:
“We pride ourselves on our dedication to wonderful food, wines, and desserts. We invite you to dine in one of our two restaurants, to enjoy our outstanding food and service, and to experience cuisine from the open kitchens of our four star restaurant, Linwoods, and its sister restaurant, Due. Our philosophy is to be the best in creating unique dining and catering experiences. ”

Organizing the wedding with Leslie at Linwood’s/Due has been a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Plus, the tasting for the three course meal was delicious and a fun event. The food is phenomenal and the service is friendly and seamless. I feel very confident about hosting our big day at Linwood’s/Due and I recommend it to anyone in Baltimore looking for a warm, intimate, and classy place for their wedding day.

There will also be workshops and keynote programs throughout the day, including:

Maintaining a Sense of Well-Being in Times of Radical Change with Carol Fitzpatrick:
We are beings of light who have come to liberate ourselves from the shackles of the mind. But we cannot do so if we have forgotten the very truth of who we are. We are not the body, and we are not the mind that tells us that we are to be afraid of change. Learn tools and strategies for rising above the strife and turmoil in turbulent times. Learn how to be the change you so desire for the world.

Breath of the Soul with Adam Gainsburg:Times of great change often send us searching for something real, something stable to hold onto. They also will often bring us to question hidden assumptions about our life. Join Adam and experience the Breath of the Soul, an elegantly simple, unique meditation experience to root you deeply in your Center, the place in you that does not change, that is timeless, that is eternal.

Soul Journey with the Native American Flute with Jan Seiden:
If you could hear the song of your soul calling to you from Creation, how would you answer? How would you manifest this song in your conscious life? Jan Seiden and her Native American flutes lead us on a journey of discovery with sound and imagery to the sanctuary of the soul. The timeless voice of these flutes speaks to our deep ancestral memories and awakens us. Combined with breath work, the music channeled through Jan’s flutes guides us in gaining new soul-level awareness of our direct connection to Creation. From this place we may manifest our soul journey in increasingly profound and responsible ways.
