Maintaining a Sense of Well-Being in Times of Radical Change with Carol Fitzpatrick:
We are beings of light who have come to liberate ourselves from the shackles of the mind. But we cannot do so if we have forgotten the very truth of who we are. We are not the body, and we are not the mind that tells us that we are to be afraid of change. Learn tools and strategies for rising above the strife and turmoil in turbulent times. Learn how to be the change you so desire for the world.

Breath of the Soul with Adam Gainsburg:Times of great change often send us searching for something real, something stable to hold onto. They also will often bring us to question hidden assumptions about our life. Join Adam and experience the Breath of the Soul, an elegantly simple, unique meditation experience to root you deeply in your Center, the place in you that does not change, that is timeless, that is eternal.

Soul Journey with the Native American Flute with Jan Seiden:
If you could hear the song of your soul calling to you from Creation, how would you answer? How would you manifest this song in your conscious life? Jan Seiden and her Native American flutes lead us on a journey of discovery with sound and imagery to the sanctuary of the soul. The timeless voice of these flutes speaks to our deep ancestral memories and awakens us. Combined with breath work, the music channeled through Jan’s flutes guides us in gaining new soul-level awareness of our direct connection to Creation. From this place we may manifest our soul journey in increasingly profound and responsible ways.

Best of Baltimore-Cast your vote!

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

bob_2006The Best of Baltimore is here again and it is every business owners hope to have this honor (and publicity). I feel especially passionate about this year’s poll because of my involvement with Baltimore Yoga Village. A lot of people still don’t know about this Baltimore jewel. There is so much more to experience at BYV than you’ll find at other studios. Outside of classes, there are musical events, dance workshops, children’s programs, Satsang (coming soon), art shows, and the best hatha yoga classes I’ve ever taken.

Here are the rules from the Best of Baltimore website:

It’s time to speak your mind without saying a word as you scribble or type your picks for all that is best in Baltimore.

* You must fill out your name and address along with a phone number and/or e-mail address where you can be reached.
* You have to vote in at least 25 categories.
* You can’t use the same answer in more than three categories.
* Vague answers like “that place on that street” will be ignored.
* And absolutely, for reals, no ballot stuffing.

Not sure what constitutes ballot stuffing in the super-scientific world of the CP Readers Poll? You are welcome to encourage people to vote for your business or artistic endeavor. You can link to the poll on your web site or hand them out at your business. But you can’t fill out polls in other people’s names. Got it? Great.

All ballots must be submitted by August. 31. The person with the best Best Reason We Should Invite You to the Best of Baltimore Party response will receive two invitations to the Sept. 20 Best of Baltimore Party.

Classical Sitar Concerts at Baltimore Yoga Village

Monday, July 30th, 2007

hasu.jpgThis Friday, August 3rd and the following Friday, August 10th, Baltimore Yoga Village is hosting Classical Sitar Player, Hasu Patel. The concerts begin at 7pm both Fridays at Baltimore Yoga Village (BYV). BYV describes the event below:

sitar.jpg

Hasu Patel plays with mastery of technique and with great soul and improvisation, as taught by her guru, the legend Sri Ustad Villayat Khan Saheb of India. She has played and composed all over the country at such venues as Woodstock, The Sivananda Ashrams, and coming soon the Symphony of Michigan. This is a once and a life time opportunity to hear her play in such an intimate setting. Cost $20. $15 for children and partipants of the Music of North India Course.

After attending Jan Seiden’s Native American Flute concert at BYV this past Friday, I will jump at every chance to attend future concerts at BYV’s close-knit, peaceful, and beautiful studio. Jan Seiden may be coming back to BYV in the Fall, so keep checking their website for Jan and other talented and unique musicians coming soon to BYV.

The Vegetarian Resource Group

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

vrg.jpgSince I’ve switched to a vegetarian diet, I’ve noticed my choices at local restaurants dwindling. I am more curious about nutrition and cooking at home. I also feel more passionate about buying local, organic produce. All of the answers to these questions can be found through the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG).

organic_farm.jpg“The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on vegetarianism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger. In addition to publishing the Vegetarian Journal, VRG produces and sells cookbooks, other books, pamphlets, and article reprints.” (www.vrg.org)

If you’re interested in anything vegetarian or vegan related, you’ll probably find it on the VRG website, but if its not there, just give them a call!

Eastern Treasures Found at Local Shop, Inspired Serenity

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

buddhaSherry Campbell has created a shop in a Hampden rowhouse that offers enchanting sounds, sights, and smells from around the world. Inspired Serenity is on The Avenue just across Chestnut St., at 720 W. 36th Street. The first time I walked into Inspired Serenity, Sherry offered me the choice of iced or hot, freshly brewed tea. She sells a variety of loose leaf and pyramid filter teas that I keep going back for. I especially enjoy the Lemon Chiffon Roiboos tea, but there are many more to choose from. I also enjoy sitting outside in the Zen Garden. Sherry has created a peaceful rock garden with a cool, shaded sitting area for capturing a peaceful moment during the day.tea_leaves

Inside the shop you’ll find: “home altars from India and Santa Fe; hand block-printed textiles for table and bed from a women’s cooperative in India; hand-painted furniture from Nepal, India and China; Japanese-style batik cotton robes from Bali; and hand-crafted jewelry from Lucy Finelli and Judy Hart”. I purchased one of Sherry’s elegant orchids as a unique gift paired with one of the beautiful hand-painted greeting cards from Bali. I also enjoy the hand-crafted Artimisia Blue Organic Lavender facial cream and Green Tea Toner every morning. There are many other Artimisia Blue Organics products at Inspired Serenity that will soothe your skin and your mind.

Upstairs, there are two massage therapists specializing in aromatherapy, deep-tissue, Swedish and Swe-Thai massage. The services and goods at Inspired Serenity will bring calm and joy to your life, even if you just stop in for a cup of tea and a few moments of peace in the Zen Garden.

Baltimore Yoga Village

Friday, July 13th, 2007

yoga_stretch.jpgI’ve been practicing yoga at Baltimore Yoga Village for a few months and the studio is my home away from home. Yoga (on many levels) occupies every inch of the old converted mill, which is off of Chestnut Street, in Hampden. The ceilings are high, the studio is painted a warm yellow, and the hardwood floors are a blank canvas to fill with your hatha practice.

There are classes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students of all ages. Yoga classes that are offered regularly include: Sivananda, Vinyasa, Ahimsa, Phoenix Rising, Tantra, Kundalini, Prenatal, and Itsy-Bitsy yoga. All of the classes have something different to offer and I recommend trying as many as possible. Not only does Baltimore Yoga Village have outstanding teachers, there are always new and exciting events happening.

One of the specials events in August includes:
Drum Talk with Moziah
Saturday, August 18th
Class Time: 1-3 pm
moziah.jpg
Moziah Saleem
A drumming workshop for all ages ~ children and adults learn the therapeutic quality of the drum. Moziah Saleem, African Percussionist, performs regularly in a reggae band, and brings his non-profit program, Drum Talk, to schools in the area. We are thrilled to offer this invigorating and educational workshop to Baltimore Yoga Village. Only $10 for adults/ $15 for adult with child.

Baltimore Yoga Village also offers bodywork, private yoga sessions, and many other services. I’ll be writing about different special events happening at Baltimore Yoga Village as they come closer, but you can always check for yourself!
